Original Carmageddon developer Stainless Games has reacquired the smash and crash racing IP from Square Enix. The new game named Carmageddon: Reincarnation is in development, looking at a release in 2012.

“Carmageddon has returned to its indie developer roots, and the time is right to bring the game to a new audience. Originally an ambitious title that tested the hardware limits of its day, we’re excited that the game will finally get the showcase it deserves on today’s platforms.” commented Stainless co-founder Patrick Buckland.

Neil Barnden added: “Carmageddon: Reincarnation will feature the same black humour and comic violence that made the original game such a success. All the laughs, the crazy power-ups, and extreme destruction will return. We will make sure the existing fans get what they want and expect from a Carmageddon game, and a new generation discovers the delights of sliding into a Cunning Stunt.”

The original game, released in 1997, sparked controversy after the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) refused to certify the game, due to its extreme violent nature and gore. But after ten months of appeal, the BBFC caved in and certified the original version. However, the game was banned completely on other countries, including Brazil. This controversy led to more popularity around the title, which led to becoming a trilogy, with sequels Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now and Carmageddon TDR 2000.

Carmageddon II is the 1998 sequel to the controversial vehicular-car-murder-simulator released back in 1997, developed by the same company, Stainless Games. Apart from the obviously enhanced graphics the gameplay stayed mostly the same, though this time around there are missions in each group of phases that you need to complete in order to advance in level. These missions are varied, like racing between checkpoints until you reach the checkered flag or killing a certain amount of pedestrians (peds), though you need to complete these objectives until the timer runs out.

Even though it received a facelift the grim atmosphere remains the same accompanied with the same vulgar humor throughout the game.
