Unlimited Detail Real-Time Rendering Technology Preview

Unlimited Detail is a technology which was secretly in development for many years. It enables computers to display infinite geometry at real time frame rates. In 2010 Bruce Dell acquired investment and Euclideon Pty Ltd was formed as a company to produce the commercial SDK.

In the graphics industry, everyone is used to using polygons, so Euclideon built a polygon converter. By converting polygons into Unlimited Detail point cloud data, you can then run them in unlimited quantities. They’ve been converted at a rate of 64 atoms per cubic millimeter. If you’re not sure how small a cubic millimetre is, that’s a rate of 1,000,000 atoms per cubic inch. In fact, there are 15 million converted polygons in every square meter of dirt, which means that in one cubic meter of dirt they have more polygons than you will find in any game that doesn’t use procedural generation.

This seems too good to be true, especially since there are thousands of people behind Unreal Engine, CryEngine and Steam – surely we would have heard about this by now. What do you think? Notch thinks it’s a scam.
