L.A. Noire is a dark and violent detective thriller set against the backdrop of Los Angeles in the post-war years of the late 1940’s, where you’ll take the reins of newly minted detective Cole Phelps as he solves gruesome and mind-bending cases, interrogates suspects, and rises through the ranks of the LAPD.

Today’s video “The Technology Behind Performance” showcases how L.A. Noire will utilize the brand new MotionScan technology, which provides an unprecedented level of realism, detail, and emotion never seen before in a videogame, bringing characters to life in a totally new way.

Buildings and inanimate objects have been evolving to the point of looking truly realistic, but facial expressions—especially the subtleties—have been a longtime struggle for developers. For the first time, lip syncing will match the vocals in a cinematic scene. L.A. Noire is notable for using Lightsprint’s real-time global illumination technology, as well as a newly developed piece of technology called MotionScan, where the actor goes into an all-white room where 32 cameras surround him and record his performance from every angle, giving a 3D rendition of the actor’s face.
